The company operates as a common stock listing on the NYSE and is organized around three business segments: Electric Utility, Gas Utility, and NorthStar Clean Energy. Through its electric utility operations, CMS Energy generates, purchases, distributes, and sells electricity using a mix of coal, wind, gas, renewable, oil, and nuclear sources. Its gas utility segment is involved in the purchase, transmission, storage, distribution, and sale of natural gas. NorthStar Clean Energy focuses on independent power production, renewable generation development, and related marketing activities. CMS Energy serves about 1.9 million electric customers and 1.8 million gas customers, including residential, commercial, and industrial users.
